Chamunda is a tribal Goddess that has been incorporated in Vedic and Tantric worship. She is a warrior Goddess that protects her devotees, destroys their most difficult inner demons, removes obstacles and gives boons and blessings. Chamunda is also known as Chamundi, Chamundeshwari and Charchika, she is a fearsome aspect of Devi, the Hindu Divine Mother and Chamunda is one of the seven Matrikas (mother goddesses). The others are Brahmani, Vaishnavi, Maheshvari, Indrani, Varahi and Kumari. Though depicted as one of the Matrikas and represents a ferocious aspect of Devi; Chamunda, like all of the eight, is a complete goddess in and of herself. Chamunda is blazing black in complexion, has a frightful face and a sunken belly; she is wearing a garland of skulls called Mundamala and is a fierce warrior, a dark Crone goddess.
